evolution of bone
Picture
Bone is a calcified tissue only found in vertebrates. It is an amazing tissue that grows, heals and adapts to the strains put on it. We can learn a lot about bone evolution through the study of fossils.
Some questions I am trying to answer are;
  • Did bone always have the features it has today?
  • What did the earliest Osteocytes look like?
  • When and why did it evolve these features?

Paleopathology is the study of ancient diseases. I study diseases and injuries in fossils to better understand ancient animal physiology. Some questions can only be answered by studying palepathologies, for example:
  • how did the earliest animals heal?
  • Did tissue regeneration exist in early vertebrates?
  • Did dinosaurs heal like birds or like reptiles?

Dental histology is the the study of the micro-anatomy of tooth tissues. I completed my MSc on reptile tooth histology, particularly focusing on acrodont dentition in modern and extinct animals.
I am still working on several projects concerning tooth replacement and growth in early tetrapods.
